The Power of Forgiveness

We keep coming back to this issue, time and time again, we keep emphasising the importance of forgiveness; and yet still we struggle with it. I think essentially the reason most of us have such a hard time grasping this concept is because its meaning is often misunderstood. Whenever we hear the word “forgiveness” most of the time we understand it to mean that we have to excuse, justify or condone the wrongdoer’s behaviour. This however is not the case, what is being asked of us is to alter our perception so that we can come to see the situation with understanding, compassion and empathy.

We have become so focused on the Shari’a that we have moved away from the true essence of Islam – from the ‘heart’ of Islam – spirituality.

It is through spirituality that we learn how to truly love. And since love is the fundamental truth in Islam, we owe it to ourselves, we owe it to our children, to our communities, to our planet, to the universe and ultimately we owe it to God to open our hearts and become more loving. By following the spiritual path we learn how to open our heart and how to keep our heart open – not just during times of happiness – but throughout our lives.
